Along the historic coastal stretch of Thazhe Angadi in Vadakara, timber has always carried memory and purpose.
Vadakara stands in what was once Kadathanad, a small principality on the North Malabar coast, and the town has never wanted for history. A few kilometres inland is Lokanarkavu, the temple whose Bhagavathy was the family deity of Thacholi Othenan — the warrior at the heart of the Vadakkan Pattukal, the Northern Ballads that gave Kerala the figure of Unniyarcha and gave Kadathanad its long reputation for kalaripayattu. This coast traded with everyone who came to it: Arab merchants, the Portuguese, the Dutch, the French at Mahe a short way up the shore, and the British after them. In the closing decades of the eighteenth century the armies of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan swept through Malabar, and households across the region scattered, returned and rebuilt. Thazhe Angadi — the lower market — is where a great deal of that traffic changed hands.
Every one of those layers left furniture behind. It is the plain reason a shop like ours can stand here at all: this stretch of coast has been accumulating other people's belongings for a very long time, and someone has to know what they are worth keeping.
Our journey began in 1988, when our founder, Mr. A. Majeed, established Malabar Antique at Thazhe Angadi in Vadakara, in Malabar's storied trading heartland. Guided by a deep respect for North Kerala's rich woodworking traditions and an uncompromising eye for authentic joinery, Mr. Majeed set out with a clear, enduring conviction: to preserve the soul, weight, and timeless beauty of handcrafted solid wood furniture. Under his stewardship, we became known for recognising seasoned Malabar teak and rich rosewood wherever it still survived — in old houses being emptied, in shuttered shops, in families parting with what they could no longer keep — and for bringing those heirloom pieces back into the light.
As homes and lifestyles evolved, so did the desire to live with furniture that carries heritage rather than imitates it. In 2016, Craft Decor was born as the natural continuation of Mr. Majeed's founding philosophy. Conceived as a bridge between past and present, Craft Decor places nearly three decades of Malabar Antique's expertise in the service of a simple idea: that an old piece, properly restored, belongs in a contemporary home as easily as it did in the one it came from. We set out to prove that modern rooms and minimalist interiors can coexist harmoniously with the honesty of traditional hand-craftsmanship.

Mr. A. Majeed — Founder
Every piece at Malabar Antique begins with a find. Each one is hand-picked for its grain, density, and natural character — and for the history still legible in its joints and its wear. We intentionally steer clear of veneer-clad reproductions and factory-aged imitations. Instead, our artisans in Vadakara repair each piece the way it was first built: time-tested mortise-and-tenon joinery, meticulous hand-sanding, and breathable finishes that highlight the natural grain of the wood. Whether it is a grand dining table designed to anchor family gatherings, a tailored accent chair, or a carved cabinet, each piece is returned to use with its history intact, to go on acquiring a richer patina with every passing year.
Rooted firmly where Mr. Majeed first laid our foundations in Thazhe Angadi, Malabar Antique remains dedicated to the quiet luxury of genuine woodcraft. When you bring one of our pieces into your home, you are not simply acquiring furniture — you are welcoming a piece of Malabar's artisanal legacy, shaped by hand, guided by decades of passion, and built to endure for generations to come.
